Nintendo DS Lite - Zelda and the Phantom Hourglass - HELP

Can anyone help me. I am playing Zelda and on my trvels keep coming across a stump with a gold top. I can jump on top of it but nothing happens. Often it is near another stump on another island or obstacle. I think I should be able to make a tightrope between the two but nothing happens. Do I need to find another tool to help .. like I have got bombs and boomerang etc ?

When you make a tight rope, you go against it and it'll throw the opposite direction. In some parts of the game, that is neccesary.
