The Wind on Fire Trilogy by William Nicholson is more for a younger audience but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.  The Chronicles of Narnia was a good read. A more difficult read is The Pellinor Series by Alison Croggon which gets you hooked. Try The Sword of Shannara Trilogy by Terry Brooks. And last, but by no means least, read Philip Pullman's trilogy [ Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass].
