The Ultimate Movie Thread
Reply Quote
Similar to the Ultimate Bands Thread but with one minor tweak I wanted to add.  In addition to the movie/movies you want to recommend you need at least one movie you recommend that people avoid, something you just believe sucks the balls of Satan himself.  I'll start it off, and if a mod or admin could sticky it like the Band thread it'd be cool.  Oh and keep in mind, I'm more an authority on horror and not too much else. Texas Chainsaw Massacre:  Really only the original version (only good horror movie without blood) and the remake are must sees.  The original is a classic, you can't really be a horror fan without seeing this at least once.  The remake, while not as epic as the original, was one of the better remakes since it adds to the story without whoring out the series, something that I like in a series.  So see this unless you don't like horror movies or are a communist. Halloween:  Same deal as above, just replace "chainsaw" with "knife". Saw series:  If you just want to see one, see 4.  If you want to see more than one then see the whole series chronologically, since you will be *** *** story wise if you don't.  Different from Halloween or the Chainsaw Massacre in that it's not just some retard (literally retarded, Leatherface and Myers both are either autistic or something) with a sharp object, the protagonist (or antagonist, depends how you view the movie) is an intellectual and tries to put in some sick, twisted morale in his traps.  Must see for gore and good story-telling fans alike, unless you get squemish, or are a communist. Thank You For Smoking:  The comedy for a cynic.  Basically the story follows the life of a tobacco industry lobbyist and all the hoops he has to jump through to keep the industry afloat.  If you're expecting the "LOL HE FARTED!" simplistic humour look elsewhere, this is the thinking mans humour and if you don't get it you're either stupid, or a communist. Any comedy starring Will Ferrell: Everybody thinks he's hilarious for a reason, 'cept for commies. Now for something I recommend avoiding: High School Musical:  How many people have seen Grease?  If so you could interchange the title and get a 2 for 1.  Basically it's a boy meets girl, boy has social pressures, boy sings and dances like he has Parkinsons disease type of story.  I'd go into detail, but frankly I don't want to.  Not because of spoilers, if you don't know how it ends you're probably too stupid to read this post anyway, but simply because something this stupid induces a gagging reflex.  I would have little beef with this if teenagers, who go to HIGH SCHOOL, didn't really believe this was the real deal.  Yes, I know people that preppy and stupid.

Ok now to add up what we have at the moment.

Jigs, I think you should make it a list like the other thread that River made.

Anyways, I'd nominate Blood Diamond. Great movie portraying the power of diamonds in Africa, and what damage they can cause. It also shows you the lengths people go to get them, and it is just a truely amazing movie. Leonardo DiCaprio did a great job in it, and it is one of my favorite movies.

One movie to avoid is The Comebacks. It's another parody movie, mocking sports movies. It is worse than Epic Movie, or any of those. It was, for the most part, just plain stupid. The jokes weren't that funny, and I wouldn't waste your time watching it. You won't be missing out on anything if you don't see it.

Yes but movies have a plot and what not and therefore need some explanation, so this format works better for this topic.  Not adding any movies, I think that post filled my quota for at least a little while.

True, but should you at least make a list of the movies, under your post and updated, without the member's personal opinion so it will make it convinient for everyone to see? Just a thought to make everything run a little mroe smoothly.

Yeah, and you should put them other two categories, one for the good movies, and one for the bad.

I'm saying 300. If you dont like that movie, you've lost your masculinity. 300 Spartan soldiers marched to Thermopylae, using the terrain to turn the battle around......Kickass action-movie! Greeks rule......

If your ever looking into movies you should probably check out the Internet Movie DataBase it's a good site for seeing what actors are in what films and some ratings, quotes, and other useful info.

Alright, I'll recommend a few.

The Boondock Saints: Two Irish brothers become Vagrants, a movie that was refused from theaters since it came out so shortly after the Columbine shootings, a cult     classic.
Flags of our Fathers/Letters From Iwo Jima: The two sides of the Battle for Iwo Jima, directed by Clint Eastwood himself.
Full Metal Jacket: The Vietnam war, both boot camp and active duty, a must watch.
28 Days/Weeks Later:    A real hit and miss review for these movies, but myself and my little brother (a Zombie Film fanatic) really liked them.
Dawn of the Dead:  Another great Zombie flick.
Shaun of the Dead:  Actually not intended to be a parody of Dawn of the Dead, but still a parody of it.  When they were filming it, some citizens actually were so             scared they stayed in their homes.
Band of Brothers: Not really a movie, a HBO series that's really damn good.
Pitch Black/ Chronicles of Riddick: The movie that gave Vin Diesel his reputation (ignoring his porn career) really good Sci-fi action film.
Platoon: Who the heck hasn't seen the scene of Willem Dafoe with his arms up in the air screeming, christ its even got Charlie Sheen in it....and not a comedy.
Hot Shots Part Deux: Charlie Sheen, parody of Rambo, a must see for classic comedy lovers.
Black Hawk Down: The story of the US mission in Somalia in 1993 where Michael J. Durant and Cliff "Elvis" Walcotts blackhawks were shot down.
American History X: The story of a Neo-Nazi and the impact his lifestyle has on his little brother and the conflict it causes in his family.
American Psycho: The author of the book even had second thoughts about even releasing the book it's just that grim.  Christian Bale is in this one.
Reign of Fire: A modern day battle against dragons that have caused the apocalypse, Christian Bale is in this one to, but not impersinating an american accent.
Shooter: Based on the novel "Point of Impact" by Stephen Hunter, a Gunnery Sergeant is framed for the murder of the president and fights to clear his name.
Children of Men: Clive Owen stars in this, about a future not too distant from today where the world has become infertile.
Equilibrium: Not the greatest movie, but if you've read 1984 you'll probably enjoy it, Christian Bale flick (Some like him, some hate him)
The Day After: What would have happened if the Cold War had gone hot, nuclear apocalypse portrayed in this film.  So terrifying that after it was first broadcast that     they had to put out a help phone line.
Death of a President: The fictional documentary on the assasination of President Bush, based in October 07, so it actually didn't happen.
Face/Off: John Travolta vs Nicholas Cage, a cop (Travolta) whose son was assasinated by our villian (Cage) now has to switch bodies (pretty much) and infiltrate            Cage's terrorist sect, but Cage's character comes out of his coma early.
Grandma's Boy: A Billy Madison film without Adam Sandler, a game tester is forced to live with his grandma, fricken hilarious, a dope smokers movie.
Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels: A British film about four guys that get into a debt that seems impossible to repay, a fricken awesome movie.
Snatch: A lot of Simularities to Two Smoking Barrels (mostly the fact that it shares a few actors), multiple stories come together surrounding a diamond.
Munich: Based on a true story, Israelies retaliate to the muslim terrorist that attacked the Munich olympic games.
Schindler's List: A film about one of the head people in the Nazi party that used his businesses to save Jews, a brilliant film but really long.
A Scanner Darkly: Keanu Reaves in a completely animated film which is....well mindbogglingly different, a undercover cop is investigating a group that are involved with a drug commonly referred to as D or Death.
Hart's War: World War II prisoners of war battle with unrest in their own ranks and murders, Bruce Willis and Collin Farell.
Lord of War: Nicholas Cage plays a weapons merchant in this movie which is based on a true story, a bit of a eyeopener.
The Rock: Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage team up against trained US marines on Alketraz (sp?)
300: Red Sauce on Pasta!....I mean "This is Sparda!", do you like armies of Spartans slicing and dicing the competition, I sure as hell did.
Silent Hill: Sick and twisted with a really neat storyline.
DOOM: Another hit and miss flick, some hate it, I loved it.  Only has some relevance to DOOM 3, but oh well, they even have a wicked FPS shooter style scene.
Cinderella Man: The underdog story of James J. Braddock, the boxer that rises up during the great depression.  Much controversy on how Maxx Baer was played as
a bit of a ***, he was actually a joker and felt horrible for the men he killed in the ring, he had a portion of the purse in all his fights go to their families.
The One: Jet Li fights himself in this Sci-fi flick of parallel universes.  "There can only be one!"
Mars Attacks: Aliens from Mars attack Earth with advanced weapons that pwn, somewhat comical....you should have guessed what happens from the title.
Pulp Fiction: Multiple stories that all come together, Quintin Terantino at his greatest, Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, Uma Thurman, what's not to like?
Reservoir Dogs: Another great Terantino film, Mr. Orange is caught in a robery that has gone sour.
Eurotrip: A splended trip to Europe in the quest of what all guys treasure most....I'm not talking about your Xbox nancyboy!
Homeward Bound: What? Am I the only one that thought a talking cat and two dogs adventure home was awesome?  A real tearjerker, like Old Yeller.

That should be enough good ones.

Legally Blonde: By God man, you know add most movies that Reese Witherspoon is in.
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: Some people like that fancy fighters who are able to fly crap, personally I think it gets old really fast.
Undead: I haven't actually seen this movie but I'm told it is really fricken dumb, a zombie flick so I trust my little brother on it.
But I'm a Cheerleader: A straight cheerleader is sent to a "straightening" camp because her parents think she's a lesbian, what do you think happens at the camp..my      friend even skipped the les. sex scene, though it didn't look that great anyways.
Gay Porn: It's just gay.

First off, nice list Dole. Love American History X top 5 favorite movies probably, just so amazing. Loved it, I can rave for hours about it. I however hated with a passion the movie Children of Men... just terrible. I'll make my own list I guess, I'll be repeating ones already listed just so you know. I'm only going to list three right now because there are so many, but you can expect to see more from me.

Braveheart: One of the best action movies you'll see in your life. Amazing story about how the Scottish and a rebellious leader named William Wallace were able to fight the dirty English. Amazing fight scenes make up this movie, along with overall awesome photography and soundtrack. Also, the actual story is stunning, especially because it's true. Mel Gibson stars in it.

American History X: Story of a skinhead in who rises in the ranks of a prominent gang. After killing two black gangsters who try to steal his care he is sent to prison. While in prison he changes his ways and gets out. He finds that his younger brother has followed in his hate-ridden path. Edward Norton attempts to save his younger brother (played by Edward Furlong who is the Terminator 2 kid) from the mistakes he made.

American Beauty: Just an amazing movie, I could rave about this longer than I could about American History X. Story of a man who goes through a mid-life crisis for lack of a better word. He basically becomes obssessed with *** his daughter's best friend. He quits his job, starts smoking pot, and various other things. The photography in this is just superb as is the acting from Kevin Spacey. The movie is full of little symbols and has so many themes and messages that I couldn't list them all if I tried. Tons of dark humor in here, and underage titties, which alone makes the movie worth seeing, haha. As weird as the movie sounds, it won Best Picture at the Academy Awards in 1999. A must see.

I can't believe I forgot Braveheart, I'm ashamed of myself.  All of my heritage was in that film, the Irish, Scottish, and the Welsh.  My friend is actually distantly related to Robert the Bruce.  One of my favorite movies....and I forgot it.

I just read the Odessey for school purposes and decided to watch "O Brother, where art thou?". It's a good, interesting movie that is loosely based on the odessey. I also watched "Super Mario Bros.", (its ok) dont watch it unless you are feeling a little bit nostalgic.

Avoid by all means epic movie. If your friend says its funny, dont believe him, he probably was drunk or stoned when watching it.

I'm a bit of an insomniac, thus i wake up way to early and am able to spot funny stuff on the tv. Usually its the typical "set it and forget it" and "it really works", but sometimes i get to see rare jewels...
