The Living Dead “Gross! What is it?” asked Willis. He was looking at a pile of bones, a skeleton to be exact. He began examining it, it was still all in one piece, and every bone was there. There was something about it that scared him, made him shiver even, but he was not sure what. He slowly picked it off the ground, making sure not to break anything, and placed it in the back of his car. “We should definitely bring this to a lab or something, to get it checked out,” said Tom as the car pulled into the 7-11 parking lot. He then added, “Get two sodas, my buddy here is awfully thirsty after being buried for so long!” Will laughed and got out of the car. Tom thought it would be a great idea to put the skeleton in the driver’s seat, so he lifted it from the back seat and placed it beside him. Then he heard a rattling noise coming from inside the corpse. He looked inside to find gold coins! Thousands of dollars worth! Some of them dated back to as far as 990! They would be rich. All while Tom was thinking what to do with his cut of the money, Will came back to the car with their sodas. “Tom, what the hell? Why is the skeleton in my seat? You could have broken it!” Will scowled. “He wanted to drive,” Tom joked, “But you’ll never guess what I found,” Tom reached into the corpse and pulled out a handful of gold coins. Will was shocked, “We’re gonna be rich!” he cried in excitement. “How much is there?” “At least a thousand dollars worth,” Tom answered. “Where do we go to cash this in?” he asked. “I think we could either bring it to the bank or an antique store,” Will replied. “We could bring it to Memphis since we’re bringing our money-filled friend there to get carbon-dated anyway,” he added. “Okay, so we’ll leave on Saturday?” Tom asked as they pulled into his driveway. “Can’t,” Will replied, “I’ve got a rugby game on Saturday. We’ll leave on Sunday.” They both agreed on this and Tom went into his house. “Mom? Where are you?” Tom asked. “Down here!” She was in the basement. Tom checked the phone before going downstairs. One missed call, from some long distance number. “Mom, who called while I was gone?” Tom asked while walking down the stairs. “I don’t know. Some man called looking for you. He said he’ll call back.” Just as Cynthia finished her sentence, the phone rang. The number matched that of the missed call. Tom picked up the phone. “Hello?” he answered. He was greeted by a deep and raspy voice. “Tom Jones, you are in great danger. I know what you have taken and I suggest you put it back or suffer the consequences,” the voice said. “If you value your life you will give back what you have stolen, or spend the rest of eternity burning in Hell!” Then Tom heard a click. The man had hung up. “Who was it?” asked Cynthia, Tom’s mother. “Just a friend calling from out of town,” Tom said. “I’m going to Memphis with Will on Sunday by the way. I just thought I’d let you know.” “Okay,” Cynthia replied, “Just be careful on the way there.” Meanwhile, back at Will’s house, the phone rang. “Willis Flick, I know what you did. Return what you have stolen or suffer a painful death.” “What? What did I take? I haven’t a clue what you’re talking about,” he replied. Then there was nothing. The other end hung up. Will knew the man was talking about the gold coins, and he didn’t much fancy a painful death, but he really wanted that money. He punched in Tom’s number. “Hey, Tom? Yeah, I just got a phone threat about those gold coins we found. What? You did too? Maybe we should return them… All right, you convinced me, we’ll cash ‘em it.” It was Sunday now, and they were in Will’s 1978 Mustang. They just passed the sign that read, “Now leaving Campbell, Tennessee,” when Tom’s cell phone rang. “Hello?” he answered. “This is your last chance. Bring back what you have taken or die!” the voice said. Then it hung up. Tom thought nothing of it. He was not worried. They reached the lab, and brought the skeleton and the coins in to be examined. “I think I can run some tests on the body, but you’ll have to bring the coins to an antique shop,” explained the scientist. Several hours later, the results of the carbon-dating test were in. “I… I don’t believe it!” exclaimed Dr. Smith. “These bones date to today. Our test shows that this man is very much still alive. I haven’t the sligh-” he was stopped in mid sentence, possibly because of the skeletal finger that just punctured his heart. “Oh my Go-”Tom tried to scream, but he too was killed. Three seconds afterwards, all three of them were dead on the ground. The skeleton laughed loudly for a good five minutes, then all was silent.
